EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY POLICY (EDP)
This is a general statement of policy. It should be read and interpreted with reference to the Code of Conduct for barristers by which the conduct of each member of the Kent Bar Mess are regulated.

The Kent Bar Mess is committed to the promotion of a culture of equality and diversity; all members should be familiar with the terms and effect of this policy.
1. Statement of Policy
1.1 The Kent Bar Mess is committed to eliminating discrimination and to the promotion of equality and diversity. This document sets out The Kent Bar Mess' policy and provides guidance to all those who are members ofThe Kent Bar Mess.
1.2 It is the policy ofThe Kent Bar Mess:
1.3 To ensure that no member or person whom has dealings with the Kent Bar Mess receives less favourable treatment (directly or indirectly) on the grounds of: race, colour, nationality, ethnic or racial origins, citizenship, gender (including gender re-assignment), sexual orientation, marital and civil partnership status, pregnancy and maternity status, religion, age or disability.
1.4 To conduct its business without distinction by reference to race, colour, nationality, ethnic or racial origins, citizenship, gender (including gender re-assignment), sexual orientation, marital and civil partnership status, pregnancy and maternity status, religion, age or disability.
1.5 To avoid any unjustifiable requirements or practices which have a disproportionately adverse effect any person by reason of any of the aforesaid and to promote the avoidance of such requirements and practices in its dealings with the courts, judiciary and other organisations.
1.6 All members of the Kent Bar Mess are required to work in conformity with this policy. No one has authority to contravene this policy.
1.7 Any display of prejudice on any of the grounds set out in this policy or any act of discrimination in breach of this policy will be regarded as a serious breach of discipline, which will be referred to the Junior and Chair of The Kent Bar Mess.
2. Implementation
2.1 The membership of The Kent Bar Mess are jointly responsible for ensuring the implementation of this policy.
2.2 An Equality and Diversity Officer (EDO) will be appointed at all times to further oversee the implementation, monitoring and review of this policy.
3. Monitoring and Review
3.1 The Kent Bar Mess recognises the need to collate, monitor and review in order to ensure that The Kent Bar Mess may best fulfil its commitment to equality and diversity.
3.2 The Kent Bar Mess will at all times maintain and implement a Diversity Data Policy.
